Ethan-Winning > Praying Mantis (Litaneutria viridis)

You can't tell me that this wasn't an inspiration for the bar scene in Star Wars. This is one of the few macros that I have taken, and this green mantis was kind enough to sit in a flower put for 10 minutes while I took a series of pictures to be certain that I got the eyes. I have no idea as to genus, and this one was no more than four inches, but for all I know it was just a puppy. I'm no entomologist, and there are 2,000 species which doesn't help. Anybody want to take a crack at it?

There are three of these photos in this gallery. This one shows more detail, but represents the dragonfly at about 25% larger than he is. This is the smallest one I've seen all summer and it's really the end of the season. This was even smaller than the damselflies and about a third the size of the Common Green Darter. Taken from about 15 feet with extreme zoom, then cropped.

Either a pondhawk or flame skimmer. You'll see tears in the back wings, and that usually means it's the end of mating season, and there isn't much time left. Going to miss them until next summer. Whole collection of these at end of gallery, but some may be pondhawks, skimmers, or red darners. (Need a better illustrated book.)

Ethan-Winning > Northern Bluet Damselfly and Nymph

Within a couple of hours, there'll be another blue damselfly at the bottom of this branch. I must admit that I didn't see the nymph until I downloaded the photo from the S3. As I've said before, there's nothing like a little luck when you're into nature photography with a point-and-shoot. (More damsels mating at the end of this gallery.)
