Praying Mantis (Litaneutria viridis)

You can't tell me that this wasn't an inspiration for the bar scene in Star Wars. This is one of the few macros that I have taken [I usually use the zoom], and this green mantis was kind enough to sit in a flower pot for 10 minutes while I took a series of pictures to be certain that I got the eyes. Female Praying Mantis Protecting Her Egg Case

Actually, a praying mantis doesn't defend her eggs, but I had to say something about the pose. Note that this was taken with a teeny Powershot P&S, often better than larger cameras when it comes to macros.

Honey Bee and Thistle

No flash was used, and this is not a macro. If you want photos of bees in flight or just hanging around, find a thistle, and snap away. If the speed is right (1/500, but not so fast as to stop the wing beat) and the aperture is correct for a blurred background (f8), this is what you'll come up with ... sometimes. This is why I've been telling people with P&S cameras, to take the darn thing off "Auto" every once in a while and try manual or Av or Tv.
