For five days in August, we hiked four trails in Sequoia National Park. Though I didn't capture many birds, even insects and wildflowers added to the fantastic scenery of this national park. This was our fourth trip to Sequoia and we concentrated on the four trails that benefited most from the phenomenal rains and snowmelt of the previous winter.

Note: Some of the wildflowers' names - and thanks to the rains, there were hundreds of them - are guesses though I have been through John Muir Laws' book til the binding is broken. If you are certain of the name, please email me.

Ethan Winning > Moro Rock

One of the first things you'll see entering from the south is Moro Rock. Even from the gentler slope, it's one of the scariest climb I've ever made. It's a sheer fall of several thousand feet, and the "guardrails" are only 18 inches high!

Round trip is 7 miles except that the last 3.5 miles is 15 miles or seemingly so. But it is absolutely beautiful with alpine meadows, glades, streams, and wildflowers galore.

And I do mean IN. These birds hop around more than the nuthatches!

Not to be confused with a Chipmunk

Both chipmunks and golden-mantled ground squirrels love manzanita fruit
