It started with an American Ketrel, then a Northern Harrier. I thought, this should be a snap. Well, I make no excuses for my point-and-shoot, but these have been toughest finds and shots of ALMOST any type of bird. March 2008

Red-tailed Hawk, Martinez, California -- The photo isn't perfect by any means, but when my reflexes are good enough to catch a bird in flight, that's an accomplishment.
Ethan Winning > Handsome Chap for a Vulture - Spring 2010

I probably see hundreds of these soaring on currents above Mt. Diablo and the Diablo Valley, but to have one land 20 feet from me was quite a treat and an opportunity. This is one more time when I wouldn't mind getting rid of a couple of twigs with PS.

Look at this at X2 or 3. Looks like the sun "sculpted" the left wing from bronze. Proves that there are few really ugly birds.

But I still think they rather regal birds. Maybe they just know how to pose, and I like to think it's for me. I usually find these two in the top of the pines overlooking the sale marsh and a place where pigeons are more plentiful than at St. Mark's Square. They have no fear of us - well, you take a look at a group of birders: do they look threatening???? Hiking sticks, binocs, cameras, food, funny hats, and constant jabber. Not exactly the Society of Stealth.

This red-tailed hawk was sitting on a pole which stretches out over part of the pond ... and his hoped-for lunch.
