Red-winged and other blackbirds, crows, jays, starlings, and the orange blackbird, the oriole...they're all related at least in my own mind. Red-winged are best viewed in X2. Well, they all are.

Almost!

On this particular field day, I took 188 pictures. I kept nine, four of those of wildflowers. One day I'm going to figure out which way the redwing blackbird - or other bird - is going to take off. Taken with the S3IS which is actually faster than my SX10, but all my point-and-shoots are sooooo slow compared to my SLRs. New motto for us P&Sers: Put the fun back into your frustration.
Taking On All Comers
A One Year Wait

I've been trying to get a Red-winged Blackbird in flight for a whole year. Patience and luck paid off today, but patience and luck are essential with a P&S camera. See photos at end of gallery for the many attempts... Maybe not as good in some respects as last year, but this time I got yeller flowers.
Redwinged Blackbird Calling (2010)

Since it's the highest post in the meadow, it's a favorite for males to display. Thanks to this and the following two photos, I have now deleted all those fair shots from 2009. Now, I still have to get one in flight and displaying with the light caught in the eye and a perfectly blue sky in the background.
Mature Redwinged Blackbird's Full Display

When the male Redwing Blackbird displays and sings, the wings go out, the epaulets become even redder, and the "brow" stands straight up. He just about doubles in size when displaying. This one wasn't just singing, he was a one-bird chorus, not letting up and not letting any other male get in his two cents.
In This Meadow, I Am the King!
He May Be King, But The Queen Rules!

Female Redwing Blackbird
Epaulets

Never thought about it before, but evidently the male Redwing blackbird can independently "raise" his epaulets as in this photo. The fact that I didn't catch the eye seems somehow irrelevant with this discovery.
